Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC)
Peer Recovery supports are based on Hope, Relationships, being Person-Centered, Many Pathways, Being Holistic, Peer Support, Culture, Addressing Trauma, Strengths/Responsibility and Respect, all Recovery Principles as outlined by SAMHSA. In order for its participants’ outcomes to be maximized, it will benefit most from being part of a Recovery Oriented System of Care, where the systems involved align with these principles.
Ideally, the skills, attitude and approach involved remain consistent with the peer model regardless of the demographics, population and environment. The variations in the work come from the mission, vision, policies and procedures of the providing agency and their approach.
How do recovery supports integrate with:
- Primary Care Models in your medical practice or Community Health Center?
- the clinical model within your Inpatientor outpatient programs?
- the criminal justice systems you work within?
- the Division of Child and Family Services systems?
- your community center and coalition programs?
- your jail diversion programs?
- your family support programs?
- And others
Peers are a focal point in today’s addiction and mental health recovery worlds where connection is the key. The recovery may not be yours but the ethical responsibility in providing these services is. We are here for you at any point in your development and provision of recovery support services.
Organizationally, how recovery-oriented is your organization? What do the stages of recovery look like for the individuals you serve? How do you support individuals and communities alike in obtaining and developing recovery wellness capital?
When implemented properly, the peer model assists individuals in exploring their identity in recovery and works towards motivation as the outcome. In working as part of a clinical team, recovery supports can foster individuals’ engagement with the systems they participate in, advocating for them along the way so that systems can much easier provide interventions. Recovery services also support the prevention of service misuse along the continuum of care for individuals as most organizations providing recovery support services are not recovery oriented. Either way, approaching individuals as the experts of their own experience is key as recovery and wellness needs are defined by the individual exploring/ seeking to improve upon their wellness.
The role of the recovery service is to support the individual in this exploration, remove barriers so that motivation proceeds and wellness outcomes are maximized for all. As a result, organizations experience greater program efficacy as well as efficiency.
Whether you’re an individual looking to be more desirable in the eyes of a potential employer, a loved one looking to educate yourself or an agency looking to build your recovery workforce or an organization seeking to integrate within systems as part of a Recovery Oriented System of Care (ROSC), Choice Recovery Coaching is here to facilitate your process.
