Frequently Asked Questions

What is a recovery coach?

A recovery coach is a trained professional who supports individuals in making meaningful changes related to substance use, mental wellness, and life transitions. Recovery coaches offer understanding, practical tools, and support so individuals can gain momentum towards their desired wellness goals.

What does a recovery coach actually do?

A recovery coach works one-on-one with individuals to build on their strengths, navigate challenges, and create new processes to improve upon their well-being. This may include developing coping strategies, improving decision-making, strengthening relationships, and creating a clear path forward based on each person’s unique needs and circumstances.

Who is recovery coaching for?

Recovery coaching is for anyone who wants to support individuals in creating lasting change related to substance use, mental health, and life transitions. It’s also for individuals who want to build on their strengths and develop a person-driven approach to substance use challenges without entering a clinical or treatment-based environment.

myCHOiCE offers coaching, guidance, structure, and accountability for those who want to get hands-on experience on their way to becoming a Peer or Recovery Professional in their state and enter the field of behavioral health.

What’s the difference between a recovery coach and a therapist?

Therapists provide clinical diagnosis and treatment, often focused on working through traumatic experiences. Recovery coaches focus on helping individuals build on their strength, take action, and apply practical strategies in their daily lives. The two can work together, but they serve different roles.

What do you need before pursuing CARC, CRPA or Nationally Certified Peer Certification?

Specific requirements vary state-by-state. Here are some of the most common requirements across state:

  • Must be 18+ year old
  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED
  • Lived experience or period of sustained recovery
  • 30-60 hours of approved recovery coach training
  • 200-500 hours of verified recovery coaching work
  • 25-50 hours of supervised peer coaching practice
  • Pass a state certification exam

Look up your state’s requirements here. And if you’ve got any questions, myCHOiCE can guide you through them.

How do I become a Recovery Coach Professional?

To become a RCP ©CCAR you’ll need to earn continuing education credits (CEs), 6 months of coaching experience, and pass a 45-minute interview testing your coaching skills with a panel of 3 RCPs.

Note: this is standard for CCAR only.
There is no single standardized pathway to certification across states.

No matter where you’re located, our goal is to guide you on your path to certification or licensure that makes the most sense for your vision so you feel prepared for and aligned with your next step.

How long does recovery coach training take?

Training timelines vary, but most certification programs can be completed within a few weeks to a few months depending on the format. At myCHOiCE, training includes structured coursework (60-90 days long) and hands-on experience to ensure you’re building meaningful coaching skills to work with people in real-world situations.

Do I need personal experience to become a recovery coach?

Many states strongly prefer or require Lived Experience or close connection to recovery, but it’s not always mandated. What matters most is your ability to support others with empathy, consistency, and professionalism. Training provides the tools, frameworks, and ethical guidelines needed to work effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

What certifications are available through myCHOiCE?

Depending on your desired coaching path, with myCHOiCE you may:

  • Earn continuing education credits (CEs) required to become a Certified Addiction Recovery Coach in your state.
  • Earn the globally-recognized Recovery Coach Professional title from CCAR (Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery).
  • Work towards the National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS) credential
  • Earn re-certification as a Certified Addictions Recovery Coach, Peer Supervisor or Recovery Coach Professional
  • Become a Peer Recovery Coach Supervisor

All pathways support entry into the field and ongoing professional development.

What happens after I complete training?

After completing training, you’ll receive a certificate of completion and have access to mentorship, supervision, and advanced learning opportunities through the myCHOiCE Learning Academy. Many individuals go on to work at treatment centers, community recovery organizations, private coaching practices, and more.
